About S J College of Nursing

Our Heritage, Philosophy & Mission

“Action with Love is Service — Serving the community since 1888”

Historical Genesis

138 Years of Compassionate Healing Ministry

The history of S J College of Nursing, Kalamassery (St. Joseph's College of Nursing) is intrinsically woven into the noble healing ministry of St. Joseph’s Hospital Trust, Manjummel. Established in 1888 by Brother Nicholas Verhoven, OCD — a Belgian Carmelite monk and skilled surgeon — St. Joseph's Hospital stands as the first mission hospital in Kerala and the second in India.

Br. Nicholas arrived on the soil of Kerala driven by a burning compassion to bring medical relief to the impoverished and suffering. From a humble dispensary compounding life-saving remedies to becoming a 300-bed modern multi-specialty institution, St. Joseph's Hospital has carried forward this holy apostolate of healing for over a century and a third under the stewardship of the Carmelite Fathers of Manjummel Province.

In continuation of this hallowed legacy, S J College of Nursing was founded to educate and mentor the next generation of nurse professionals — instilling in them not only cutting-edge scientific clinical precision, but also the tender compassion and sacrificial love of Jesus Christ, the Divine Physician.
